Types of Toxic Mold

Types of MoldMold is never something you want to find in your home. While not all types of mold are toxic, many still present possibly health problems. It is very important to contact professionals if you find mold in your home. Most of the time it is not possible to know whether or not a specific mold is toxic or not unless you get it checked out by someone who deals with mold every day. Toxic mold is the type you have to worry about the most, though. If there is toxic mold in your home, mold remediation will be necessary, but what are the toxic types of mold? There are five main types.

  1. Stachybotrys (stack-ee-botris) – This type of mold is the most lethal. Some people only suffer from minor aches, pains, and ailments while others have been known to contract diseases such as cancer from this mold. People with weaker immune systems are the most susceptible to illnesses associated with stachybotrys. This is also known as toxic black mold for its coloration.
  2. Cladosporium – While not as toxic as stachybotrys, cladosporium has still been known to make people ill but is most associated with allergies, asthma, and infections. It can grow on floors and wallpaper if there is any moisture to feed it.
  3. Fusarium – You won’t find fusarium growing in your house, but you may find it in your vegetables. It is not something that you want to ingest. It can cause infections similar to those that cladosporium presents. Take care to make sure you know where your food is coming from and what is growing in your garden.
  4. Penicillium – This particular mold might sound familiar. It is what the antibiotic, penicillin, derives from. The mold is useful in medications when the correct strain is used. Different types of this mold present different problems, though. It can grow on food that has been left too long in the refrigerator and make a person very sick.
  5. Aspergillus – Of the five molds listed, this is the least harmful to humans. It is found in the air as well as in water damaged buildings and air conditioning units that haven’t been cleaned. Aspergillus is known to cause infection on occasion.

In order to keep your home safe from these types of mold, make sure you get a mold inspection at the first sign of dampness or possible infestation.

Things You Should Know About Mold

Everyone knows what mold is, but few homeowners really know all they should about mold. And the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) thinks this is unacceptable. So without further ado, here is the EPA’s list of things you should know about mold.

Things You Should Know About Mold

  1. Know where Mold grows: So where does mold grow? EVERYWHERE! If the conditions are right, mold growth can and probably will occur.
  2. Health Effects: Mold has been linked to a number of health issues, including allergic reactions, asthma, and other respiratory problems.
  3. Control Moisture, Control Mold: The best way to control mold is to control the moisture in your home. Fix any leaks or water problems as soon as they are discovered.
  4. Insulate: If your pipes tend to produce condensation, you should strongly consider insulating them to prevent mold growth.
  5. Humidity is not your Friend: Besides moisture, mold needs humidity to grow. Reduce indoor humidity to 30-60% to decrease the chances of mold growth. You can do this by venting bathrooms and dryers to the outdoors, increasing ventilation, using dehumidifiers, and more.
  6. Be Smart: Do not install carpeting in areas prone to moisture.
  7. Time is of the Essence: Mold growth can begin in just 24-48 hours following water intrusion. So time is of the essence.

If you have or suspect a mold problem in your home or business, don’t delay; call your local mold remediation company right away!
