Winter can be a lonely time of the year, with everyone staying in their homes to avoid the cold weather. However, mold spores do not find the winter so lonely. Mold spores take advantage of our behavior during the winter months. As we shut our windows and doors, we create an environment that becomes suitable for mold to grow. We at Chesapeake Environmental Cleaning Systems have some tips and solutions to help prevent mold growth during these cold winter months.
During the winter, there are several activities that we are more likely to perform that cause mold to grow. We tend to close our windows, doors and whatever else we can in order to keep the cold from entering our cheery and hopefully warm homes. By closing everything and insulating ourselves, we actually create an environment suitable for mold growth. We tend to turn the thermostats up, which creates warmer air to combat the frigid winter air outside. The downside to having our homes too encapsulated with insulation is that this warm air cannot escape. The insulation traps in the warm condensation and humidity levels for a longer time during the winter because we are not opening our homes to the outside environment as much. These factors lead to more possibilities of mold growth during winter months.
There are some hot spots where you can watch for this mold growth during the winter months. Mold growth is commonly found on the exterior of drywall, sheet rock and in the corners of the home. Corner rooms’ walls are subject to the warm air on the inside and cold air of the winter. This creates a higher relative humidity level in these areas of the home. The higher humidity is part of what causes mold to grow. Just as the outside walls deal with differences in temperature, inside walls also combat the same issue. If one room is much colder than the other then the same basic concept comes to life in this scenario as well. Winter months can be tricky in preventing mold growth but we do have some tips for you.
Do not get too worried. We have some tips for you that can alleviate some of these potential mold growth scenarios during winter.
- Make sure to clean areas in which you have experienced mold growth in the past during winter months.
- If you find one particular spot in your house that tends to be more humid than others you can place a dehumidifier in the area.
- Do not store food scraps, clothing materials or other sources mold can grow on in these more humid areas of your home.
- Make sure to repair any source of water leaks in your home, such as a pipe or window.
- Make sure your gutters are clean so water can flow freely from your roof.
