Basements and Mold

Basements and Mold

Flooding basements tend to be a problem this season in Baltimore with the strong summer storms. Not only does it ruin floors, furniture, and other basement items, but having a wet basement can also pose a big health risk: mold. Most dampness is accumulated from melting snow or rainfall. When the groundwater rises, it may seep its way into the cracks in the foundation of your home, and enter your basement. However, flooding isn’t the only thing that can cause a wet basement that leads to mold. Take a look at a few other ways that mold can creep up on you:

Condensation – Just like a cold can will “sweat” when sitting outside in the warmer air, your basement walls can do the same. When the cold foundation meets the warmer air, it causes condensation to build up on the walls and floors of your basement. If this goes unnoticed, mold can start to grow in this damp, cool place.

Gutters and runoff – It is important to make sure that the water is successfully directed away from your home through the gutter and spout systems. If not, that just gives the water a straight shot into the ground and foundation of your home. By placing splash blocks under the gutter, it can help direct the water away.

As you can see, damp basements are a common issue. However, it is very important to keep it dry to decrease the chance of mold accumulation. Mold can cause a variety of health issues that can be extremely damaging with overexposure. So how can you prevent it?

  • Check for any cracks or holes in the walls and foundation
  • Fix any leaky pipes
  • Place a dehumidifier in your basement to keep the humidity and moisture down
  • Every couple of months, check the vents, wall cavities, insulation, storage spaces, undersides of furniture, and any other dark, damp spaces where mold may begin to grow

Mold is not an enjoyable issue to deal with, and it is all too common in basements. If you think you are already experiencing mold in your basement, it’s best to hire a mold removal professional. Chesapeake Environmental Cleaning Systems can help you locate the mold growth, identify which type of mold has begun growing, and eliminate the mold from your basement. We also offer free mold inspection. Our specialists will not only remove the mold from your basement, but can guarantee that it will not return.

Dealing with Moisture Intrusion

A large number of basements in the United States are unfinished. They are just sitting there waiting for homeowners like you to transform them into the room of your dreams, whether that be an extra bedroom, a game room, or even a man cave. But before you can begin any basement remodeling project, it is important to do a couple things first.

  1. Mold Inspection: Unfortunately, basements are often synonymous with moisture. And when the conditions are right, this moisture could lead to mold. And the last thing you want to do is put up walls over existing mold.
  2. Mold Removal & Remediation: Mold is not something that can be cleaned using bleach or any other household cleaner. Mold removal must be dealt with professionally by a certified mold remediator, like the ones found at Chesapeake Environmental Cleaning Systems, LLC. We do not cover up mold, WE REMOVE IT!
  3. Remove Moisture: If no signs of mold are found, but there is still some source of moisture in your basement, it is important to correct the problem before doing any construction. Otherwise, you run the risk of mold in the future. And once you have finished your basement, mold removal and remediation becomes a lot more difficult.

Dealing with Moisture Intrusion

First, it is important to identify the underlying cause of moisture intrusion. Is the moisture caused by condensation or is moisture seeping through from the exterior of the house? To find out, tape a 2-foot square sheet of plastic to the masonry on a below-grade area of the wall. If moisture collects on the front of the plastic, it is condensation. If water collects on the side of the plastic attached to the wall, then the problem is most likely coming from outside, also known as runoff.

Check back next week as we discuss several simple ways of Dealing with Basement Water Intrusion: Correcting Condensation & Runoff.

How to Remove the Smell of Mildew

Your worst nightmare has officially become a reality; your home has flooded ruining many of your precious belongings.

Your basement has been cleaned up and drained of any excess water but the room still has a lingering smell of mildew. How do you get rid of that?

Because the basement is underground, the answer is not going to be as simple as ‘open up a window.’ To fully remove the smell from the area, you are going to need to locate the source of the stench. The easiest way to get rid of the smell is just to throw away the item entirely, if it is the wallpaper, carpet, clothing, furniture or any other removable object that is the best route to go.

Then place a dehumidifier in the room, this will help decrease the moisture levels in the air so the mildew can stop growing.

If the mildew is coming from a non-fabric material, you’re going to need to get some bleach and a scrub brush to remove the stench. Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy trick for this. Scrubbing out the smell of mildew requires a little bit of time and some elbow grease.  When you’re done, simply wash off the surface with plain water and wipe it dry with a towel.
